Hello Blog!

I practiced hitting golf balls Friday. During the 20% class time, I took my wiffle balls and a couple short irons and went to the practice field to hit a few. I made contact with at least 65% of the balls I swung at, but I hit probably five perfect and straight balls out of 35. Then later that day, I went to the driving range! It was so official; I saw business men and everything typical at a golf course. I actually improved within the few hours spent in between practicing at school and practicing at the range. I tried to focus on contact with the ball instead of power, and every time I did that I got a contact with the ball. However, any time I tried to swing the club hard, I missed or cut the ball hard right. I learned that I have a problem with closing the face of the club for a straight shot, watching the club hit the ball for a clean impact, and swinging the club straight along the target line during impact with the ball. I had a great time at the range! This upcoming week, I will probably review during the week or the morning of 20% time day and then go out to the practice field again to try out my swing. Also, I have my first lesson with an instructor this week. I hope that he can improve my game 5,000%.

Good warm up at the range:
1) Swing at a dozen balls with your feet together.
Swing the club in between 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
This warm-up drill makes the golfer focus on watching the ball and gives the golfer a bit of confidence.

Remember:
1) Try to keep the thumbs in neutral position- which means after setting up the grip, make sure both thumbs line up straight down with the shaft of the club.
2) Keep the club in your fingers, not your palms.
3) Keep the grip pressure to a 5- based on 1 to 10 scale.

  1. When I hear, "golf," I think of Granddads. Many people have memories of going to the green with their Granddad, but I am glad you are going for it now. You can do anything form volleyball and school and even golf; I see you as a great all-around girl. You rock. I like that you are actually practicing a lot outside of 20% time at school. That is time, money, and effort consuming, so props to you for fully committing to this project the most you can. I hope you learn a lot and get good enough to outdo any stereotype of girls playing golf(I know you will).

  2. I always thought of golf as a really boring sport and I was never interested in it, but reading your blogs have helped me learn more about golf. If you are looking for a fun way to practice golf, you could go to TopGolf. It's a fun golfing place and you could practice while having fun! I really liked reading about the techniques, and keep up the good work!

  3. Wow Cori! I enjoyed reading all of your posts and learning about golf, which I didn't know much about. The links and images are very helpful. I love how passionate you are about this project as well as how you reflect on your abilities and improvement. I applaud you for working on this project outside of class. I can fully sympathize with college applications getting in the way sometimes, but it looks like you have a great project going on regardless. I can't wait to see what you have for us next!

  4. How sophisticated! Should I expect to see you at country clubs with white gloves and your own personal caddy? For someone who has always been interested in golf (but has only mastered putt-putt) this blog is amazing! I love how your project leads you to be active, not just sitting at the computer researching. I also love all the pictures you've included! I'll be checking back yo your blog to see the progress you've made, and I might even come to you for some pointers!
    best of luck :)
